Equipment Usage and Safety
We classify our tools into three levels based on the potential risk to people and property:
- Low Risk: Self-assess your competency and use if comfortable. Ask for help if needed. Stay vigilant about safety.
- Medium Risk: Requires demonstration of competency, safe use, equipment care and maintenance.
- High Risk: Requires an induction before use. Only authorised personnel can train on these tools. The Cutting Room (Red Zone) with high-risk tools will be locked when no authorised person is present.
What software is on the computers?
Our PCs and laptops are currently running Windows 11 Pro. We strive to use open-source software wherever possible which means that much of the software on our PCs can be installed and used at home.
It also means you can do further learning, designing and refining on your home computer, then bring in your digital file and Make-It.
Visit our Software page for a list of what we have currently available.
There's always new software becoming available and we aim to provide a cutting-edge facility for our members. Please let us know if you have any suggestions for software!
Can I bring my own equipment?
Yes! If you need to use something that is not on the equipment list or want to bring your own computers and laptops, please do! If you’re hoping to bring big or expensive equipment, please check our Terms Of Use. If you have any suggestions or special requirements, please contact make-it-space@dardanup.wa.gov.au.
What materials do I need?
The Make-It Space provides materials for new members to familiarise themselves with equipment, for induction sessions and some facilitated workshops.
Once you know how to use the equipment and are ready to work on your own projects, you will need to supply your own materials.
See our Materials page for a full listing of materials we recommend for our machines.
Does it cost to become a member?
Currently, it’s free to join the Mick Bennett Make-It Space. The only costs involved are the materials required to make your projects.
Do you accept donations of equipment or materials?
Yes! Thank you! Please read the Make-It Space Donations Policy if you have items you’d like to donate.
Can I volunteer at the Make-It Space?
Yes! We would love to have you onboard! Speak to a Make-It Space staff member or contact make-it-space@dardanup.wa.gov.au
