Committees and advisory groups

The Shire of Dardanup has a range of committees and advisory groups that support Council decision-making, governance, emergency management and community engagement.

The Local Government (Administration) Regulations 1996 require local governments to publish details of ordinary Council meetings and committee meetings that are required or proposed to be open to the public for the preceding 12-month period.

The legislation also provides for public access to meeting agendas, supporting documents and minutes, subject to provisions that allow certain information, or parts of meetings, to be closed to the public.

Committees of Council

Under section 5.8 of the Local Government Act 1995, a local government may establish committees by absolute majority decision.

Committees of Council form part of the Shire's formal governance framework and operate in accordance with the Local Government Act 1995 and the Local Government (Administration) Regulations 1996. 

These laws set requirements for matters including the conduct of meetings, public access, publication of meeting details, and the availability of agendas and minutes.

Statutory committees

Some committees have a different legislative basis from committees established under the Local Government Act 1995. As a result, the public meeting requirements that apply to committees of Council do not necessarily apply to these committees.

Local Emergency Management Committee

The Local Emergency Management Committee is established under section 38 of the Emergency Management Act 2005.

The Act requires each local government to establish one or more local emergency management committees for its district.

The committee supports local emergency management arrangements and works with relevant agencies and organisations to prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies.

Meetings of the Local Emergency Management Committee are not required to be open to the public.

Bushfire Advisory Committee

The committee provides advice to the local government on bush fire prevention, control and related matters.

Meetings of the Bush Fire Advisory Committee are not required to be open to the public.

Advisory groups

Advisory groups provide advice, consultation and stakeholder input to the Shire on specific local issues, projects and areas of community interest.

Unlike committees of Council, advisory groups are not established under section 5.8 of the Local Government Act 1995 and do not operate under the same statutory meeting requirements.

Committees are formed with objectives:

  • To advise and assist the local government in ensuring that local arrangements are established for its district
  • To liaise with relevant agencies and other persons in the development, review and testing of Council policy and strategic objectives
  • To carry out research and other activities as directed by the Council or prescribed by the regulations
  • To undertake other specific tasks as an advisory Committee of Council.
