Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

Is the rural kerbside waste service compulsory?

Yes. A whole-of-Shire approach ensures all eligible rural properties receive a fair and consistent level of service. Council has been hearing for many years from rural residents seeking a more reliable waste solution.

In 2024, the Shire successfully trialled a voluntary rural kerbside waste service in parts of Henty and the Ferguson Valley. Based on the strong community uptake and operational success of that trial, Council resolved to extend the service across the entire rural community as a long-term, sustainable solution.

In order to be able to deliver this service economically, the Council has resolved to introduce the service as a compulsory service to all eligible properties. This will effectively ensure that all properties within the Shire that have residences or businesses, are provided with a waste collection service.

When will the service start?

The service will be progressively rolled out between April and May 2026.

Collections will commence once bins are delivered and will occur weekly. Your bin will display a sticker showing your collection day.

When will charges apply and how much will it cost?

Charges will apply from 1 July 2026 and will be included in your annual rates notice. For reference, the fee for the 2025/26 financial year was $253 per annum.

Fees for the 2026/27 financial year are yet to be adopted and will be confirmed on the Shire website when adopted by Council.

What bins will I receive?

Each eligible rural property will receive:

  • One 240L general waste (red-lid) bin – collected weekly.
One 240L recycling (yellow-lid) bin – collected fortnightly.

My property has two houses - how many bins will I receive?

One compulsory service applies per property assessment number. This includes the delivery of one general waste bin and one recycling bin.

If additional bins are required after the service has commenced, these can be requested through the Shire and will be charged in accordance with the Shire of Dardanup’s Fees and Charges Schedule.

Can I order additional bins?

Yes. Additional bins can be ordered once the service has commenced. All additional bins are subject to fees in line with the Shire’s Fees and Charges Schedule.

My property has difficult verge access - what happens?

Properties with uneven verges, drainage infrastructure or access constraints will be assessed on an individual basis at the time of bin delivery.

Veolia and/or Shire officers will contact you if adjustments are required to ensure safe and practical collection.

My property includes multiple lots under one assessment number - how does this work?

One compulsory kerbside waste service applies per property assessment number.

This includes the delivery of one general waste bin and one recycling bin.

My land is vacant and does not have a dwelling - can I receive the service?

No. The rural kerbside waste service is available to rural properties with a dwelling only. Vacant land is not eligible for the service.

Can I opt out of the service?

No. The rural kerbside waste service is compulsory for all eligible properties, as endorsed by Council.

Can I use my own bins?

No. Only Shire-issued bins can be used for kerbside collection. These bins are branded and registered to each property within the collection system.

Why doesn't the rural service include a FOGO bin?

The rural kerbside waste service is a two-bin configuration (general waste and recycling). This reflects operational and logistical considerations specific to rural areas.

Rural properties typically manage food and garden organics on-site through composting.

How do I use the discounted tip pass voucher?

The discounted tip pass voucher must be redeemed in person by the property owner at the Shire’s front counter and is valid for future purchases only. It cannot be used as a reimbursement for past transactions.

My land is vacant and does not have a dwelling - can I receive the service?

No. The rural kerbside waste service is available to rural properties with a dwelling only. Vacant land is not eligible for the service.
