Scoop the poop and leash the beast: A tail of dog etiquette

In the Shire of Dardanup, we love our furry friends – but not their droppings.

While our Shire boasts a generous spread of dog exercise areas from Eaton to Burekup, a few rogue pooch parents are leaving behind more than paw prints on our sporting grounds.

And let’s be honest, no one wants to play footy in a field of landmines.

Let’s clear the air (and the grass):
Dogs are welcome in many public spaces, but rules vary depending on the location. Some areas are off-leash havens, others are strictly on-lead zones, and a few are no-dog zones altogether. The key? Look for the signs – they’re not just decorative!

Off-Leash = off-duty
Even in designated dog exercise areas, your pup must be under effective control. That means:

  • You can see your dog at all times.
  • They respond to voice commands – even when a squirrel sprints by.
  • They don’t harass people, pets, or wildlife.

And yes, you still need to carry a leash. Think of it as your superhero cape—ready to save the day if your dog decides to go rogue.

The dirty truth
Leaving dog poop behind isn’t just gross – it’s illegal. Rangers can issue fines. So, bring your own waste bags (park dispensers aren’t always reliable), and scoop that poop like a responsible citizen.

Special events = special rules
During Shire-approved events, all dogs, yes, even the well-behaved ones, must be on a lead in dog exercise areas. It’s about safety, respect, and keeping the peace.

Assistance dogs
These heroes in harnesses are welcome everywhere, regardless of signage. They’re trained to help, not hinder.
