The Shire of Dardanup has welcomed a significant grant from Lotterywest, with $2.09 million in funding announced today for the next stage of the Burekup Community and Sporting Precinct Upgrade.
The grant will support Stage 2 of the project, transforming the precinct into a vibrant community destination with a new skate park, pump track, playground and nature play area, community amphitheatre improvements and supporting public spaces.
Shire President Tyrrell Gardiner said the precinct has been designed to provide more opportunities for active recreation, social connection and community wellbeing for people of all ages.
Cr Gardiner said the announcement follows years of planning, advocacy and community engagement involving local residents, sporting groups, families and students from River Valley Primary School.
More than 400 pieces of community feedback have helped shape the vision for the precinct, with strong support identified for youth-focused recreation infrastructure.
Cr Gardiner said the Lotterywest funding was a major milestone for Burekup and the broader district.
"This grant from Lotterywest is a significant milestone for Burekup and demonstrates a shared commitment to building vibrant and connected communities in regional Western Australia,” Cr Gardiner said.
"We appreciate Lotterywest's ongoing contribution to regional communities. This grant will help deliver modern, inclusive spaces where local families, young people and visitors can come together, be active and connect with one another.
"This project has been many years in the making and has only been possible thanks to the passion and advocacy of the Burekup community, including the Burekup Country Club, Burekup Cricket Club, local families and many other stakeholders who have helped shape the vision."
Cr Gardiner said Stage 1 works, currently underway, include new changerooms and public toilets, cricket facility upgrades and supporting infrastructure improvements, made possible through funding from the Western Australian Government’s the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF).
“I would also like to thank our Local Member for Collie-Preston, Jodie Hanns MLA and the WA State Government for their support of this project,” he said.
“Stage 2 will build on these foundations by delivering a contemporary recreation precinct that responds directly to community priorities and the needs of local families and young people.
“Looking ahead, Stage 3 will focus on further sporting infrastructure improvements, including changeroom extensions, new sports oval infrastructure, oval lighting and reticulation upgrades to support the precinct’s long-term growth and functionality.
“The project aligns with the Shire's long-term vision for healthy, connected and active communities and will provide significant benefits for local youth, families and sporting clubs for generations to come.
“Renewing community assets is a key priority for Council, and this project demonstrates our commitment to providing modern, accessible facilities that will serve our growing communities well into the future."
Cr Gardiner said the work to deliver this project starts now.
“Projects of this size and scale take time, and we're committed to keeping the community informed as planning progresses,” he said.
"Detailed planning is currently scheduled to commence in mid-2027, with the community having opportunities to help shape the design of the new facilities. Construction is anticipated to be completed and the facilities opened to the community by mid-2029."
Member for Collie-Preston Jodie Hanns MLA said the Lotterywest funding will transform the precinct into a place where kids, families and sporting clubs can come together.
“I’m also delighted to be delivering on my election commitment of $20,000 towards the Burekup Cricket Club’s practice net expansion, so local players have better facilities to train and play.
“Together, these projects show what’s possible when the community, the Shire and the State Government work together.
“Congratulations to the Shire of Dardanup, the Burekup Cricket Club and the Burekup community that has championed this.”
