Think like a Pet Hero!

Every September the Shire of Dardanup encourages pet owners to be a Pet Hero. But what does that mean and how can you be a hero for your pet?

Dogs and Cats have a special place in the hearts of millions of Australians. Owning a pet is a responsibility that requires you to give understanding, affection, shelter and sustenance, and in return you will receive loving companionship.

Research studies have shown that owning a pet can have measurable health benefits for pet owners including a lower risk of heart attack, lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure and lower triglyceride fats in their blood than non pet-owners.

As well as administering and enforcing the Dog Act 1976, Cat Act 2011 and their associated regulations and Local Laws within our boundaries, the Shire of Dardanup provides education and awareness about being a responsible pet owner – or Pet Hero!

In addition to the standard care responsibilities of owning a pet, being a Pet Hero means:

  • Ensuring your dog or cat is sterilised to reduce the number of unwanted pets in our community;
  • Registered with the Shire of Dardanup ensuring adequate contact records in the event your pet goes missing;
  • Your dog is kept under control including not creating a nuisance through barking and on leash in public outside of designated off-leash dog exercise areas
  • Collecting and disposing appropriately of dog excreta in public areas
  • Keeping your cat inside at night and within your property boundaries during the day
