The Shire of Dardanup is seeking community input on its Waste Management Plan 2024, emphasising its commitment to delivering an efficient and effective waste service that meets the needs and expectations of the community.

Shire President Cr Tyrell Gardiner said the plan aims to divert as much waste from landfill as possible, aligning with the Government of Western Australia’s material recovery targets outlined within the Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030.

“The Shire’s priority is to ensure that our waste management practices are sustainable and responsive to the needs of our growing community,” Cr Gardiner said.

“We recognise the importance of community input in shaping our waste management strategies."

Cr Gardner said the Waste Management Plan 2024 addresses the Shire’s five overarching waste services, with particular focus on Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO).

He said FOGO constitutes a significant portion of the Shire’s kerbside collection, and sustainable processing of this material is crucial for achieving state recovery targets.

“The Shire is currently seeking community feedback on various aspects of the plan, including options for innovative solutions to enhance the sustainability of waste operations in the future,” Cr Gardiner said.

“Community input will help ensure that any future contracts for FOGO processing prioritise environmental stewardship and sustainability.”

Additionally, the plan highlights items regarding the Shire’s Waste Transfer Station operations, including the beginning of a feasibility study into relocating the Waste Transfer Station.

“The Plan also addresses the downstream flow of recycled materials, particularly in light of upcoming federal export bans, aiming to enhance the circular economy principles within the Shire,” Cr Gardiner said.

"With our population projected to grow significantly in the coming years, it’s imperative that we plan ahead to manage waste effectively and sustainably.

"We encourage all members of the community to participate in the consultation process and share their valuable insights."

The Plan is now available for public comment until 4pm on Tuesday, 7 May 2024.

Submissions should be addressed to the CEO and can be emailed to records@dardanup.wa.gov.au or mailed to PO Box 7016, WA, 6232.
