The Shire of Dardanup’s planning framework has entered a new era, with the Western Australian Planning Commission approving Local Planning Scheme No. 9 (LPS9).
LPS9 was published in the Government Gazette on 23 June 2025 and now replaces Town Planning Scheme No. 3, which has been in effect since 1979.
Shire President Cr Tyrrell Gardiner described the approval as a “game-changer” for the community.
“We’re now working with a planning framework that reflects the needs and opportunities of the 21st Century,” Cr Gardiner said.
“This is about setting the foundations for responsible growth while preserving the lifestyle, environment and values that make the Shire of Dardanup such a great place to live.”
Cr Gardiner said the updated scheme brings the Shire in line with current State planning policy and provides greater clarity and consistency for landowners, developers and the wider community.
“With the South West region continuing to attract new residents and investment, the Local Planning Scheme No. 9 is key to ensuring well-managed development that supports thriving, connected communities,” he said.
Frequently Asked Questions:
What is a Local Planning Scheme and why is it important?
A Local Planning Scheme is a legal document that guides how land can be used and developed. It outlines what can be built, where it can be built, and how land is zoned (residential, commercial, industrial, etc). It helps ensure growth is planned, consistent and in the best interests of the community.
Why did the Shire need a new planning scheme?
Our previous scheme (TPS3) was adopted in 1979 — over 45 years ago. It no longer reflected modern planning needs or current State Government policy. LPS9 brings our planning framework into the 21st Century, making it clearer and more efficient for everyone.
When does the new scheme take effect?
Local Planning Scheme No. 9 came into effect on 23 June 2025, when published in the Western Australian Government Gazette.
How will this affect me as a property owner?
For most people, it won’t change anything day-to-day. But if you’re planning to build, renovate, subdivide or develop land, there may be new requirements to consider. The new scheme provides more clarity and alignment with modern development standards.
Will this change my property zoning?
In some cases, yes — there are zoning changes across the Shire to better reflect land use today and into the future. You can check your property’s zoning under LPS9 by visiting our website or contacting our Planning team.
Will my existing approvals or applications be affected?
No. Any existing development approvals or valid applications made under the old scheme (TPS3) will continue to be honoured. All planning proposals will now be assessed under LPS9.
How does LPS9 support our growing community?
It ensures we can manage new development in a planned and balanced way — encouraging growth while protecting our rural character, environment and local identity. It also helps us attract investment and build vibrant, connected neighbourhoods.
