Planning for our future growth

Growth is coming. But we’ve been planning for it.

The Shire of Dardanup is committed to preserving what residents love about where they live while capitalising on opportunities that come with growth to enhance lifestyle.

To achieve this, we’ve broken new industry ground on future planning to ensure our preparation for significant change and extensive projected growth over the next 30 years is water tight.

We’ve brought together more than two years of intensive community consultation on a variety of strategic plans, into comprehensive "Place Plans" for the urban areas of Eaton and Dardanup – long term blueprints for their upgrade and revitalisation.

Now Council is seeking a tick of approval on the Plans from land owners and residents from Eaton and Dardanup.

Place Plans to guide future development are a recognised tool of local governments, however the Shire of Dardanup has raised the bar by incorporating Masterplans that have distinct, measurable actions at various scales.

The new plans both consolidate and enhance previous work by the Shire including:

  • 2050 Vision
  • Council Plan 2022-32
  • Community Facilities Plans – Eaton-Millbridge & Dardanup
  • Place & Community Plan 2020-30

The documents capture qualities of the local social, cultural and physical character, as well as the history, that defines the unique sense of place in Eaton and Dardanup.

They characterise and frame future staged development, improvements, investments, actions, initiatives and activation to ensure a concise and cohesive direction rather than an ad-hoc approach.

The Plans detail Facilities, Activities, Character, Technology and Services (FACTS) for each area, even providing guidance on preferred colour palettes, materials and planting for development to celebrate and enhance the character and sense of Place.

Prior to development of the Plans, consultation with a range of stakeholder groups through phone calls and workshops, plus input from Council’s Advisory Groups, was combined with inputs previously captured during the 2021 Community Satisfaction Survey and a series of project-specific consultation processes such as 2050 Vision and Community Facilities Plans.

The process represents a best-practice Place-based approach to planning which demands collaboration, partnership and shared design for building thriving communities.

Dardanup Shire President Mick Bennett said he hoped the communities of Eaton and Dardanup would draw comfort from knowing such a comprehensive process of planning and preparation had been undertaken to ensure a bright future for current generations and the next.

“The Shire of Dardanup has been identified in State Government planning as a premier catchment for WA’s future urban and industrial expansion,” Cr Bennett said.

“We have been saying for some time the next 30 years will be a transformative time in the history of our area and the truth is, that transformation is already occurring.

“Just recently, a national study measuring movement of people from cities to rural and regional areas identified the Shire of Dardanup as receiving the highest population migration growth rate in WA.

“Development of these Place Plans means we are ready and provides a strong foundation for advocacy and attracting external funding support to help progress listed actions.”

Cr Bennett said once the plans for Eaton and Dardanup had been adopted by Council, staff would work towards a similar outcome for Burekup.
