As the WA Government reviews the Cat Act 2011, now is a great time for Shire of Dardanup cat owners and residents to consider what responsible cat ownership means in our community.

The current Cat Act aims to promote responsible cat ownership while reducing the impacts of roaming and unwanted cats on the community and environment. Under the legislation, pet cats over six months of age are required to be microchipped, sterilised and registered.

What does responsible cat ownership look like?

Responsible cat owners help keep their pets safe while also protecting neighbours, local wildlife and the broader community.

Some simple ways to be a responsible cat owner include:

• Ensuring your cat is microchipped, sterilised and registered.
• Keeping registration and microchip details up to date if you move or change contact details.
• Preventing your cat from wandering onto neighbouring properties or becoming a nuisance.
• Providing appropriate food, shelter, veterinary care and enrichment.
• Taking steps to protect local wildlife by supervising outdoor activities or keeping cats securely contained at home.

The Shire also offers a Cat Sterilisation Program, with a limited number of vouchers available to assist eligible residents with sterilisation costs.
