Our brand new $1.2 million Eaton Skatepark and BMX pump track is now open for use.
In addition, the new Eaton Activity Centre is taking shape with the full length of Council Drive being opened to traffic again tomorrow afternoon (Thursday, December 24) by Eaton Fair contractors following realignment and reconstruction works.
Still to come in the Activity Centre early in the new year will be a footpath linking Glen Huon Playground to Recreation Drive; shade sails, skatepark lighting, further landscaping plus a new fence and netting for the softball ground.
With some smaller works projects still continuing, the Shire of Dardanup asks drivers and pedestrians to remain cautious while travelling through the area.
The new Eaton Skate Park and pump track is integrated into the Eaton recreation precinct and co-located with the playground.
At more than twice the size of the existing skatepark, the concept was created by Skate Sculpture and New Line Skate Parks following a series of hands-on community design workshops with skatepark users.
The detailed design was carried out by Convic and construction by Advanteering.
As well as skate plaza, bowl and flow zone with varying levels of difficulty to accommodate all ages and levels of ability, the new Eaton Skatepark includes a bmx pump track.
Planning for the project commenced in early 2018 with a Council working group first proposing relocation of the skatepark from its existing site.
Its strategic location is adjacent to the planned new community hub and library, opposite the site of Eaton Recreation Centre’s future expansion and in-between the football and softball club pavilions.
Shire President Mick Bennett said the family friendly activity zone would provide benefits for youth and young families by providing new opportunities for social interaction and participation in an active lifestyle.
“What’s fantastic about this new facility is that it accommodates skateboards, scooters and bmx with significant challenges for advanced users while still having something to offer for users with beginner and intermediate skills,” Cr Bennett said.
“It will absolutely be a drawcard for visitors with sought-after features including a main bowl, taco, wave ramp and quarter pipe with hip, box and volcano.”
The new Eaton Skatepark has been funded via:
- $210,000 Lotterywest Grant
- $210,000 cash in lieu of public open space developer contributions
- $230,000 Federal Government Local Roads & Community Infrastructure Program grant
- $250,000 Council’s Building Asset Management Reserves
- $20,000 towards bmx pump track from Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries Community Sport and Recreational Facilities
- Fund grant.
Shire of Dardanup CEO André Schönfeldt said an official opening ceremony would be held early in the new year with planning also underway for an exciting new evening event called ‘Enlighten’ to be held at the skatepark in March – an inclusive and immersive digital event experience co-created with the community.
