New Civic Building to showcase timber

Showcasing the possibilities for more sustainable practices through timber construction of the Shire’s new two-storey Civic Building in Eaton will be an exciting outcome of Council’s decision in December to award formal Design and Construct Contracts.

Local company Perkins Builders received the contract for construction while Peter Hobbs Architects and Advanced Timber Studios will undertake the detailed designs.

Awarding of the contracts was foreshadowed by Council in October with agreement to an Early Contractor Involvement Contract with the three companies – a precursor process which allowed Council to consider a number of options and draft designs.

Architectural designs for the almost $15 million new building are intended to be finalised by July and construction is due to commence in September.

Dardanup Shire President Mick Bennett said awarding of the construction contract to Perkins Builders represented a significant business opportunity for sub contractors.

The Civic Building will aim to provide a new heart for connecting community in the centre of Eaton and include a high standard public library, Makerspace to foster connection through creativity and shared interests, a mixed-use community hub with meeting space for local groups, civic spaces and the Shire’s new Administration Building.

“Our community wants to feel more connected,” Cr Bennett said.

“This is one of the key messages we received loud and clear from extensive community consultation undertaken over the past two years – from our 2050 Vision consultations to youth gatherings, to town meetings and interactive, online forums.”
