Just a little reminder to ‘Bin It’!

bin it

While most people do the right thing with their rubbish, there are a lot who continue to leave litter, throwing it from vehicles or on the ground.

The Shire of Dardanup is promoting the Keep Australia Beautiful’s campaign message to “Bin It” as a reminder to the community.

As well as our website, reminders will appear on Facebook over coming days with associated information about littering.

For instance, did you know…

Litter has a serious impact on the natural environment. Even organic matter can take months to break down. It attracts animals to the roadside, which can be lethal for them and dangerous for motorists. It is also harmful for pets and wildlife to ingest decomposing rubbish.

Plastics have an especially devastating impact on animals and marine life, and cigarette butts remain in the environment for up to 12 years. Cigarette butts remain one-third of the litter items counted every year in Western Australia.

Littering is illegal and you could be fined.

Under Western Australia’s Litter Act 1979, the Shire of Dardanup is authorised to enforce the act and our Rangers can take action against those who litter. This action can be in the form of ‘on-the-spot fines’.

Not paying your fine can lead to court action or result in your fine being sent to the Fines Enforcement Registry which has the power to withdraw licences until the fine is paid.
