Local artists are invited to express interest in creation of works to feature on the columns of Bridge 1845 on the new Bunbury Outer Ring Road.

This bridge  will carry traffic over Golding Crescent in Picton, Ferguson River and Boyanup-Picton Road.

This artwork will be a gateway to the Ferguson Valley and is an opportunity for artists to express local identity. It is one of seven urban art installations along the 27km stretch of the BORR going through country important to the Wilman and Wadandi people.

The art opportunities have been selected to tell a story to travellers passing through this country.

The key principles of the commissioned art are to:

  • Celebrate specific attributes of place and location;
  • Tell “stories” of the cultural and natural history of the area;
  • Potential to incorporate local Noongar heritage, stories and art;
  • Draw upon the history, character and culture of Greater Bunbury Region;
  • Reflect ‘themes’ and ‘colours’ from community consultation drawn from the planning phase of the project.

The Noongar Six Seasons are embedded into the BORR project’s urban design to recognise the Aboriginal Heritage of the area, as well as to achieve the desired harmony with the natural surroundings of the BORR, making it complementary to the area rather than ‘standing out’.

This theming will be applied to urban design and public art elements such as bridge abutment patterns, noise walls, feature light poles and Public Art.

Artwork for Bridge 1845 will be applied to the columns of the bridge and therefore will be visible to traffic on the Boyanup Picton Road and Golding Crescent which pass under BORR.

The identified season for the Bridge No. 1845 is Bunuru, the hottest time of the year and the second summer of the season, with little rain. It is represented by oranges, reds and yellows for heat, sun and fire. This project is being delivered by Main Roads BORR contractor South West Gateway Alliance.
