An opportunity to learn and grow at a three-day bush adventure camp will be provided to a group of local 13 to 18 year olds through a new scholarship program being offered by the Shire of Dardanup.

Applications are now being sought from residents interested in a scholarship that will cover participation in a Bush Adventure Learning Program provided by outdoor education provider Jocelyn Evans from Right Foot Forward.

The Bush Adventure Learning Program provides opportunities for young people to engage in practical learning in the natural environment which simplifies life to our most basic needs of food, water, air, shelter and warmth.

The expedition nature of the program allows the time and space for young people to take responsibility for their journey, themselves and one another with time relevant only to day and night.

During the 3-day camp based in the Boranup Forest near Margaret River, participants hike between campsites and are involved in cooking their own meals, setting up camp and a number of outdoor activities including:

  • Caving
  • Team building activities
  • Camping
  • Hiking
  • Aboriginal culture sessions

Right Foot Forward WA was borne out of owner Jocelyn Evans’ passion and belief in the outcomes gained from adventure based learning and her desire to see all people have access to opportunities like the Bush Adventure Learning Camps.

Jocelyn has 18 years’ experience in the Outdoor Education industry, 3 years’ experience as a Youth Worker and is passionate about developing programs based on the principles of Bush Adventure Therapy.

Dardanup Shire President Mick Bennett thanked community sponsors JP Group and the Eaton Lions Club for supporting the project.

Cr Bennett said the scholarship program addressed an action listed in the Place & Community Plan 2020-2030 adopted by Council earlier this year – In partnership with agencies, develop targeted programs for youth aimed at reducing crime and anti-social behaviour.

Scholarship applications close on Monday, 21 February 2022 with follow-up interviews to be conducted soon after.

For more information about the program contact Shire of Dardanup Place & Community Officer Samantha Dixon via email samantha.dixon@dardanup.wa.gov.au or by phone on (08) 9724 0392.
