When the Shire of Dardanup decided back in 2012 to make a $50,000 contribution to the St John of God Foundation for its Bunbury-based South West Coronary and Cancer Care Service, Council was well aware of the tremendous benefit the service would provide to regional patients.
But there is nothing quite like hearing one individual’s personal story and expression of thanks to really remind you of the difference that was made by that decision.
In an emailed letter to CEO Mark Chester, patient Paul Merks said:
I contracted lung cancer at the end of 2015. Fortunately I have responded well to treatment and have been able to avoid some of the nasty side effects that come with that.
Presently I am having fortnightly immune cancer therapy treatment at St Johns Bunbury.
I noticed with interest that the chair that I have used on several occasions was donated by the Dardanup Shire.
The purpose for this contact is to convey my sincere thanks to the Shire for your wonderful gift and to say that it a most relaxing and comfortable chair for the 2 hour treatment time that I spend there.
The Shire of Dardanup was listed on the chair as recognition of that $50,000 contribution.
Thank you for sharing your story Paul. Congratulations on the positive direction in your treatment journey.
