A big group of Shire residents from a broad range of backgrounds made their Australian Citizenship Pledge at a ceremony held in Council Chambers recently.

And the celebratory atmosphere was heightened by the inclusion, for the first time, of a four-song performance by the Vocal Fusion Choir.

Conferees came from Zimbabwe, South Africa, United Kingdom, India and Iran.

The Ceremony coincided with the release of data from Census 2016 showing growth in the number and diversity of migrants arriving in Australia.

New Census data showed the ‘typical’ West Australian had at least one parent who was born overseas.

Nationally, 28.5 per cent of our population was born overseas.

In the Shire of Dardanup, a smaller 23.5 per cent of residents were born overseas.
