Identifying a new location for the Eaton Skatepark plus investigating options for expanding the Eaton Recreation Centre with new indoor and outdoor courts and additional parking will be the focus of a new Shire of Dardanup Council Working Group.
The group to be led by Shire President Mick Bennett was established by Council at its meeting last week after a report by Recreation Centre Manager Ben Jordan pointed out potential and emerging land-use conflicts between the two projects.
Two years ago Council approved construction of two all-weather outdoor courts at the Recreation Centre with the $606,000 construction project to commence in 2018/19.
In addition, a business case would be developed for two new indoor courts.
Since then however, relocation of the skatepark was proposed under a plan by Eaton Fair owner Citygate Properties to purchase land currently occupied by Council’s Administration Centre and skatepark for commercial expansion.
Under the proposal, Citygate has offered allocation of 3000sq m to the Shire within the boundary of Eaton Fair for a new two or three-storey building to house a new co-located administration centre and community library.
The Shire has appointed an architect to independently investigate cost efficiency of the plan.
In his report to Council Mr Jordan said it was now necessary to view the projects as a whole, rather than in isolation to achieve the best outcome for meeting community needs.
Council has requested the new Working Group to provide a report on its investigations by March, 2018.
Stay tuned for further updates as this project progresses…
