Winter preparation underway for next fire season

It might be winter but now is the time the Shire of Dardanup begins working on preparing members of our 8 volunteer bushfire brigades for the coming fire season.

We are looking for ‘everyday heroes’ to step forward and register interest in becoming a brigade member as part of a winter campaign to bolster brigade numbers.

And Dardanup Shire President Mick Bennett was quick to point out it wasn’t just those willing to be on the end of a hose at fire fronts that were needed.

Catering, transport, committee roles and radio communications were just a few of the other important functions involved in the operation of our volunteer brigades.

Opportunities for younger members of the community to get involved were also available through the cadets program for 11 to 16 year olds.

“Being a volunteer is a rewarding experience,” Cr Bennett said.

“It’s an opportunity that is open to all to meet new people, learn new skills and provide assistance in protecting your community.

“Members embrace values such as respecting others, working together as a team and acting with honesty and integrity.”

Cr Bennett also said it was a great time to become a member of the Dardanup Centrals Volunteer Bushfire Brigade with recent completion of a brand new brigade building, achieved with State and Federal Government funding support along with a bequest by resident the late Mr Alexander Poad.

Waterloo Bushfire Brigade is now also well equipped with a recently upgraded building.

Residents interested in being a volunteer bushfire brigade member can contact the Shire of Dardanup Emergency Management Officer 9724 0347 or email brigade@dardanup.wa.gov.au
