Vandals target foreshore trees

A continuing schedule of improvements by the Shire of Dardanup to Eaton’s hidden gem – Watson Reserve – has suffered a setback following the removal without permission of six newly planted trees along the Collie River foreshore.

The trees were planted according to improvements listed for attention under the Watson Reserve Master Plan, adopted by Council last year and developed with extensive community input.

They were removed within days of being planted and have now been replaced using limited spare stock by the Shire’s Parks & Environment Team.

In addition to shade and beautification, the trees – once mature – provide important habitat for endangered Ringtail Possums and erosion control for the banks of the Collie River.

It was not the first time trees in our parks and open spaces have been purposefully targeted, with vandalism an ongoing problem that we will continue to monitor with support from Ranger Services.
