Dardanup Shire President Mick Bennett has announced his intention to retire from Council at the October, 2023 Local Government elections following 28 years of service to the community.

Cr Bennett was first elected to Council in 1991. He has served five years as a Councillor, three as Deputy Shire President and two 10-year stints as Shire President separated by a four-year break from Council between 2005 and 2009.

Deputy Shire President Tyrrell Gardiner said Cr Bennett was a passionate believer in the value of local government and had led the community through a period of exponential growth.

“Cr Bennett’s skills as an advocate, mediator, collaborator and communicator across various levels of government and community have resulted in the realisation of many significant community facilities including the Eaton Recreation Centre, Eaton Football and Softball Pavilions, new Eaton Skatepark, Eaton Bowling Club & Senior Citizen’s Centre, Wells Recreation Changerooms, plus the Library, Administration and Community Centre currently under construction,” Cr Gardiner said.

Cr Bennett has also been active in formal planning processes for the new City of Wanju and contributed significantly to a vision for the area as a state-leader in sustainable living.

“His high level of commitment to Council, the community and his duties over an extended period of time is without question,” Cr Gardiner said.

With his “make it happen” attitude, Cr Bennett has been the driver of an enormous variety of initiatives ensuring the Shire, its community and the surrounding region have benefitted from opportunities as they arose. Cr Bennett has also served on various regional groups and demonstrated his passion across the broader South West with a particular focus on the Bunbury Geographe area.
