An event concept launched last year by the Shire of Dardanup and designed to draw community members into their local parks to foster social connection has been evolved and expanded this year thanks to support of a State Government grant.

The LiveLighter Summer in Your Park series involves 28 free family friendly events at parks in Burekup, Eaton and Dardanup from December, 2021 to February, 2022.

The project is funded by Council with support from a $10,000 Healthway grant.

Participants will have the opportunity to watch a movie under the stars in their local park, catch local musical talent, join in on a wellness activity or sign the kids up for an outdoor themed school holiday program or library event.

The event series kicks off on Friday, December 18 with Movies by Moonlight in Burekup and will include pre-show entertainment and food options.

Community consultation undertaken last year and prior to Council’s adoption of its Place and Community Plan 2020-2030 revealed a series of recurring feedback themes including a desire for:

Increased community connectedness through events, activities and projects. This includes the development and delivery of local initiatives that encourage connection within communities, are inclusive of the entire community, and that actively include those who are vulnerable and/or at risk of social isolation.

Dardanup Shire President Mick Bennett said the resulting Place and Community Plan includes five key focus areas and the Livelighter Summer In Your Park series ticked the box on four out of five of those areas.

“This event series is about creating vibrancy and connection in our communities,” Cr Bennett said.

“It’s about really making use of the wonderful recreational spaces we have available in the Shire of Dardanup in a way that brings people together while at the same time creating a sense of inclusion and reduced feelings of social isolation for those potentially vulnerable members of our community.”

As well as three Movies by Moonlight events, Summer Sounds will be on tour offering two hours of live music in Millbridge, Burekup and Dardanup plus a night nature walk, school holiday programs, story times in the park, yoga and a teddy bear’s picnic.

The project is funded by Council with support from a $10,000 Healthway grant, promoting the LiveLighter message. Take action against unhealthy lifestyles, and start to LiveLighter today!
