Shire honours long-serving president with highest award

Retiring Dardanup Shire President Mick Bennett today received the highest honour a Council can bestow upon an individual – the title of Honorary Freeman.

The award recognises Cr Bennett's as an Honorary Freeman of the Shire for his remarkable dedication and exceptional service over his illustrious 28-year tenure, which includes two 10-year terms as Shire President, separated by a four-year break, three years as Deputy Shire President, and five years as a dedicated Councillor.

Shire of Dardanup CEO, André Schönfeldt, expressed heartfelt congratulations to Cr Bennett on his impressive career in Local Government and his unwavering commitment to the community.

"Cr Bennett has been an outstanding leader and steadfast advocate for our Shire during a period of exceptional growth. His dedication and passion for our community have been truly commendable," Mr Schönfeldt said.

“Under Cr Bennett's leadership, the Shire of Dardanup has seen significant progress and development, and his contributions have left a lasting mark on the community.”

Deputy Shire President Tyrrell Gardiner said Cr Bennett’s “make it happen” attitude had been the driving force of various initiatives, which had benefited not only the Shire but the broader community and region.

“This award goes beyond Mick’s role as a Councillor, he has been such an important and well-loved community influencer with so many groups, sporting clubs and organisations,” Cr Gardiner said.

“Cr Bennett has also served on various regional groups and demonstrated his passion across the broader South West with a particular focus on the Bunbury Geographe area.

“His ability to inspire positive change and foster a sense of unity within the Shire will be remembered and valued for years to come.”
