New location sought for Burekup RV stopover

A hunt is on in Burekup for the most appropriate overnight caravan stop location, following a Council decision to close the town’s existing site.
Community feedback to the Shire of Dardanup has indicated general support for provision of a 24-hour Recreational Vehicle Stopover facility due to the associated economic boost it brought to the town.
However at its meeting last week, Council heard the Gardiner Reserve location and 72-hour length of stay offered by the now-closed site has attracted 160 complaints, prompting 55 visits by Shire Rangers.
Shire President Mick Bennett said most complaints related to campers parking outside the designated stopover area and not adhering to the conditions of use displayed on signs at the site.
Council agreed to close the existing site and commence consultation with the Burekup community on an alternative location.
Cr Bennett said it had become evident over the past 12 months the level of monitoring and enforcement needed at the site to ensure compliance and reduce negative impacts on nearby property owners was beyond a level our Ranger Services were equipped to achieve.
Cr Bennett said a similar facility had been operating successfully in Dardanup for the past two years but felt its location was better suited to the use.
“It’s fantastic that Burekup is such a welcoming community to visitors and I am confident that we can find a successful solution that will allow overnight caravaners to stop in and enjoy the country hospitality on offer without creating any level of disruption to the town’s permanent residents,” Cr Bennett said.
A report on outcomes of community consultation regarding a new location for a Burekup RV Stopover is due for presentation back to Council in June so please do stay tuned for opportunities to provide your input.
