New city of Wanju moves a step closer

Dardanup Shire President Mick Bennett and Collie-Preston MLA Jodie Hanns want the world to know their region is open for business!

Cr Bennett and Ms Hanns met at the site of WA’s newest future city – Wanju – this week to celebrate another milestone achieved along the road to realisation of a vison.

The State Government recently provided its approval for amendments to the Greater Bunbury Region Scheme allowing for rezoning of land in the areas of Wanju and the nearby planned Waterloo Industrial Park in line with District Structure Plans adopted for the developments in the middle of last year.

Late last year, Dardanup Shire Council also awarded a $500,000 contract to Integran Pty Ltd for creation of a Developer Contribution Plan for Wanju and Waterloo, with preparation to occur in consultation with land owners and expected delivery of the plans towards the end of 2022.

Cr Bennett said the Developer Contribution Plans would provide an increased level of detail for the urban and industrial expansion areas allowing Council to set the tone, objectives and timing of development.

Once prepared and approved by Council, the plans will be presented to the WA Planning Commission for adoption.

Cr Bennett thanked the State Government for its assistance via the WA Planning Commission in reaching this stage of the project.

Background

As noted in the Shire of Dardanup’s 2050 Vision document, the shire has been identified in State Government planning as a premier catchment for WA’s future urban and industrial expansion. The next 30 years will be a transformative time in the history of this traditionally rural landscape.

Wanju – The planned new city of Wanju is located within 1,200ha in the north-west corner of the shire and will accommodate 60,000 people and almost 20,000 homes. It is set to re-define modern urban planning and design in Western Australia with commitment to sustainable living practices, supported and driven economically by a neighbouring 1,350ha area of identified industrial expansion – Waterloo Industrial Park.
