An opportunity to learn and grow at a three-day bush adventure camp will be provided to a group of local 13 to 18 year olds through a scholarship program being offered by the Shire of Dardanup.
It is the second year applications have been opened to residents interested in a scholarship that will cover participation in a Bush Adventure Learning Program provided by outdoor education provider Jocelyn Evans from Right Foot Forward.
Following excellent feedback from participants earlier this year, the program has been expanded for 2023 from a two-day program with no overnight camping to a 3-day and 2-night adventure.
The Bush Adventure Learning Program provides opportunities for young people to engage in practical learning in the natural environment which simplifies life to our most basic needs of food, water, air, shelter and warmth.
The expedition nature of the program allows the time and space for young people to take responsibility for their journey, themselves and one another with time relevant only to day and night.
The 3-day camp will take place in new location in the South West with participants hiking between campsites and will be involved in cooking their own meals, setting up camp and a number of outdoor activities including:
- Team building activities
- Camping
- Hiking
- Indigenous culture sessions
Right Foot Forward WA was borne out of owner Jocelyn Evans’ passion and belief in the outcomes gained from adventure based learning and her desire to see all people have access to opportunities like the Bush Adventure Learning Camps.
Jocelyn has 18 years’ experience in the Outdoor Education industry, 3 years’ experience as a Youth Worker and is passionate about developing programs based on the principles of Bush Adventure Therapy.
Dardanup Shire President Mick Bennett thanked new major sponsor Bunbury 4x4 for supporting the project as well as participant sponsors the Eaton Lions and J&P Group.
Cr Bennett said the scholarship program addressed an action listed in the Place & Community Plan 2020-2030 adopted by Council in 2022.
“In partnership with agencies, develop targeted programs for youth aimed at reducing crime and anti-social behaviour,” the plan says.
The camp will take place on Monday 17 to Wednesday 19 April 2023 with the camp location to be determined at a later date.
A presentation event will be hosted after the camp and invitations will be sent out to families of the scholarship recipients as well as sponsors and members of the community.
Scholarship applications close on Monday, 20 February 2023. You can find out more and access the application form via this page of our website.
