Meet the man in charge of volunteer fire fighters in our shire

Exactly WHAT keeps a local bloke who runs his own civil works contracting business volunteering to fight bushfires for near on 30 years?

Chris Hynes is the Shire of Dardanup’s Chief Bushfire Control Officer – in charge of 8 local volunteer brigades.

Chris has been on the end of a hose, worked in operations, assisted at the tragic Waroona fires and recently Wooroloo and has a list of accreditations and training associated with fighting bushfires as long as your arm.

But what drives his decades of dedication to fighting bushfires?

“It’s just part of my life now,” he said.

“In my younger years it was the adrenalin I guess but now…it’s essentially being able to beat it.

“It’s like winning the grand final. You kicked arse, you’ve done your job. It’s that kind of feeling.”

Meet Chris and you will quickly come to realise how he has managed to progress through the ranks of volunteer bushfire brigades.

The man is as cool as a cucumber. Incredibly matter-of-fact about the intense level of stress he manages in his role of Chief Bushfire Control Officer – a position he has proudly held since 2014.

It’s hard to imagine where he finds time for his contracting business.

He commits without thinking but admits when people give their thanks to other fire fighters it “hits me in the chest a bit”.

Chris said previous bushfire emergencies have delivered many lessons for the 8 brigades operating within the Shire of Dardanup and serve to ensure more streamlined processes and response in the future.
