Food Safety

Western Australian is protected by some of the most comprehensive food safety laws in Australia.  These laws require a high standard of hygiene in the production and sale of any food or beverage.

Food safety is an important matter.

The Department of Health and Federal Government set the standards for food safety, but Local Governments like the Shire of Dardanup enforce the laws and serve as the lead enforcement agency when it comes to the supply and production of safe food from local food businesses.

If you have a food safety matter to report, please use the Complaint Form (Form 95).

The Department of Health Food Unit provides a range of additional information for consumers.


FOOD SAMPLING

Environmental Health Officers conduct routine sampling of locally produced food as part of a State-wide food sampling program coordinated by the Local Health Authorities Analytical Committee (LHAAC).  The program targets foods which are a current health concern to verify food compliance with the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code.

If you are a local food producer, the Shire may be in contact with you at some time throughout the year to obtain a food sample as part of this program.

I’M ALERT Food Safety Training

The Shire provides access to a free on-line food safety training program called I’M ALERT.  The program is ideal for any food business that is involved with the production of food, and covers the fundamental principles of food hygiene and the production of safe food.  Food businesses operators and their staff are encouraged to undertake the course which takes about 90 minutes to complete, and provides a certificate of completion at the end of the course.
