Teens set to depart on sailing adventure

A group of six teenagers from Burekup, Dardanup and Eaton will embark on the adventure of a lifetime after being awarded a Leewuin Scholarship by the Shire of Dardanup.

The group will depart on a 6-day voyage from January 19 between Bunbury and Fremantle aboard the STS Leewuin II.

The voyages are operated by the Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation on the sailing vessel STS Leeuwin II, which is a full working ship.

During the trip the participants will be involved in most aspects of ship operations, from sailing, steering, setting the sails, navigating and scrubbing the deck to climbing 35m masts.

The program is designed to help young people build skills such as self-confidence, communication, teamwork and leadership.

To receive the scholarship, applicants were required to undergo an interview with a selection panel of three Dardanup Shire Councillors and Culture & Community Services Officer Melanie Serra.
